VITILIGO

Introduction

Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune skin disorder characterised by the loss of skin pigmentation due to destruction or dysfunction of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin. It leads to white or depigmented patches on different parts of the body. Vitiligo is not contagious and does not cause physical pain, but it may significantly affect emotional wellbeing and self-confidence.

The condition can appear at any age and may progress slowly or rapidly depending on individual factors.

Causes

Vitiligo is primarily considered an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes. Contributing factors include:

Genetic predisposition
Family history of autoimmune diseases
Emotional or psychological stress
Hormonal imbalance
Oxidative stress
Skin trauma (injury, burns, friction)
Thyroid disorders

In many cases, the exact trigger may not be clearly identified.

Symptoms

White or milky depigmented patches on skin
Symmetrical distribution in many cases
Premature greying of hair in affected area
Depigmentation of lips or mucosal areas
Gradual spread over time
Increased sensitivity to sunlight in affected patches

Vitiligo commonly affects hands, feet, face, lips and areas around body openings.

Types of Vitiligo

Segmental vitiligo – affects one side of body
Non-segmental vitiligo – symmetrical and more common
Focal vitiligo – limited to small area
Universal vitiligo – widespread depigmentation

Complications

Emotional distress
Low self-esteem
Social anxiety
Sunburn risk due to lack of pigmentation
Association with other autoimmune disorders (thyroid disease)

Management

Avoiding skin trauma and friction
Balanced nutrition
Stress management
Thyroid screening if required
Psychological support when needed

Early evaluation helps in monitoring progression and associated conditions.

Homoeopathic Approach

Homoeopathy focuses on constitutional correction and immune modulation rather than only treating skin patches. The treatment is individualised based on:

Pattern of depigmentation
Onset and progression
Emotional state
Family history
Associated autoimmune tendencies
General physical constitution

The aim is to regulate immune imbalance and support natural repigmentation potential over time.

Common Homoeopathic Remedies

Arsenicum Album
Calcarea Carbonica
Sepia
Sulphur
Natrum Muriaticum
Phosphorus

Remedy selection and potency must be individualised after detailed case analysis by a qualified homoeopathic physician.

When to Seek Medical Evaluation

Consult a doctor if:

White patches are spreading rapidly
There is sudden extensive depigmentation
Associated hair loss occurs
There are symptoms of thyroid imbalance
Psychological distress becomes severe
