FEVER

Introduction

Fever is a temporary rise in body temperature, usually indicating that the body is fighting an infection or inflammatory condition. It is not a disease by itself but a protective response of the immune system. Normal body temperature is around 98.6°F (37°C), and fever is generally considered when temperature rises above 100.4°F (38°C). Fever can occur in both mild viral illnesses and serious medical conditions, so proper evaluation is important.

Causes

Fever may develop due to various reasons, including:

Viral infections (common cold, flu, viral fever)
Bacterial infections
Throat or respiratory infections
Urinary tract infections
Inflammatory diseases
Heat exhaustion
Post-vaccination response
Autoimmune conditions

In children, fever is often caused by viral infections and usually resolves within a few days.

Symptoms

Elevated body temperature
Chills and shivering
Sweating
Headache
Body ache and joint pain
Fatigue and weakness
Loss of appetite
Irritability (especially in children)
Dehydration in prolonged cases

Severity of symptoms may vary depending on the underlying cause.

Complications

High-grade fever if untreated may lead to:

Dehydration
Febrile seizures in children
Delirium in elderly patients
Underlying infection complications

Persistent fever lasting more than 3–5 days requires medical evaluation.

Management

Adequate hydration (water, oral fluids)
Complete rest
Light and easily digestible diet
Regular temperature monitoring
Lukewarm sponging if temperature is high
Medical consultation in persistent or recurrent fever

Children, elderly individuals and patients with chronic illness require closer observation.

Homoeopathic Approach

Homoeopathy selects remedies based on the pattern of fever onset, intensity, thirst pattern, sweat characteristics, mental state and associated symptoms. The approach focuses on supporting the immune response and relieving discomfort through individualised treatment.

Common Homoeopathic Remedies

Aconitum Napellus – sudden onset fever after exposure to cold wind
Belladonna – high fever with throbbing headache and flushed face
Bryonia Alba – fever with body pain worsened by movement
Gelsemium – fever with weakness and heaviness
Arsenicum Album – fever with restlessness and burning sensation

Remedy selection must be based on total symptom picture and professional evaluation.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention

Seek urgent care if:

Fever above 103°F (39.4°C)
Fever lasting more than 3 days
Severe headache with neck stiffness
Persistent vomiting
Difficulty breathing
Confusion or drowsiness
Seizures in children
Signs of dehydration
